Gua Sha

What is gua sha?

Gua sha is a technique in which Dr. Moshkovich uses a ceramic tool to rub the skin of your neck, shoulders, and back to promote circulation and health similar to cupping. Gua sha is a safe and effective treatment that has a wide application for acute and chronic conditions.

What conditions benefit from gua sha?

By increasing blood circulation, gua sha helps reduce inflammation and promote healing. Among the conditions that benefit from the ancient Chinese treatment are:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Breast engorgement in breastfeeding women

If you’re struggling with symptoms of perimenopause, which is the time period in a woman’s life when her hormones begin to fluctuate before she reaches menopause, then you may want to consider gua sha. The holistic treatment may help reduce your fatigue, anxiety, and hot flashes.

Am I a good candidate for gua sha?

Dr. Moshkovich determines if you’re a good candidate for gua sha when you come in for a consultation. Before you start any treatments at Nirvana Naturopathics, Dr. Moshkovich conducts a comprehensive evaluation to understand your specific health needs and determine the best treatments for you.

While you may be focused on your symptom or health concern, she’s more focused on your overall health and wellness.

If she thinks you would benefit from gua sha, she provides you with her recommended treatment plan so you know what to expect and how to prepare.

What can I expect during gua sha therapy?

Dr. Moshkovich uses a small rounded ceramic tool to perform your gua sha. You shouldn’t experience any pain during your session; the therapy should feel like a deep tissue massage.

During your session, Dr. Moshkovich begins by first applying an oil to your skin to improve the movement of her tool. Then, she presses the tool against your skin and firmly strokes your skin in one direction.

After your session, you may notice bruising or redness in the treatment area. This is due to the pressure of the ceramic tool, which may cause the capillaries near the surface of your skin to break. Despite the potential side effects, you should feel relaxed after gua sha.
